Souper fail…week 4

“The only real stumbling block is fear of failure.

In cooking you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.”

Orange and green mush…

For this week’s installment I had decided to do a riff on the Portuguese kale soup, which has spicy sausage, potatoes/white beans and kale. I thought, “What could go wrong…it has kale, the super food?!?!” Unfortunately, I tried substituting sweet potatoes for the white potato/bean component and ended up with a soup that was way too sweet. I choked down one bowl in stubborn defiance and then as the sweet potatoes began to turn into mush before my eyes, I gave it a sweet send off down the garbage disposal.

So, note to the blogosphere…be careful in using too many sweet potatoes in soups and also if you are going to include them, make sure you leave them a bit bigger since cutting them too small can lead to them breaking down as the soup cooks (and when you reheat) leaving a orange green textureless mess.

Do not fear fellow soupers…I shall return next week with a new recipe to fill your tureens.
